What Does Team Building Really Means?

Searching for the meaning of the English term “team building” in the Collins Online Dictionary, we found the following definition:

"The practice of promoting good working relationship among the members of a group, often through activities, events, etc designed to encourage cooperation.

For us as trainers, the meaning of team building is even much deeper.

Because it touches on fundamental aspects of human nature and aims to highlight the central role that people have—or should have—within companies.

Origins and History of Team Building

Before we proceed with our brief analysis of the meaning of the term team building, it may be interesting to explore its origins and history.

A story that traces its roots back to the early 1900s, with the first studies on group dynamics carried out by psychologists such as Le Bon, Freud, and McDougall, but which comes to life between the 1920s and 1930s thanks to the experiments conducted by an organizational theorist named Elton Mayo at the Western Electric Company, an American telephone equipment factory.

During those same years, other researchers also began exploring similar approaches within organizational contexts. Among them, German educator Kurt Hahn stands out—widely regarded as the father of experiential learning and outdoor training—who founded the first experiential training school in Wales in the early 1940s.

To further explore the origins and history of team building, we suggest this beautiful article by Cristiano Botti, percussionist, singer-songwriter, and experiential trainer.

What Are the Objectives of Team Building?

The objectives of a team building can be different and vary depending on the needs that the company wishes to address, as well as the type of activity chosen.

Given the wide range of options available today, we believe it is almost impossible to define a single, universal set of objectives for team building. There are countless types of team building experiences and activities—both indoor and outdoor—each with its own distinctive features, making it suitable for achieving one or more specific goals.

In short, organizations today have an extensive range of options to choose from, with virtually unlimited opportunities—just as there are numerous objectives that can be achieved through team building.

The Benefits of Team Building

It’s easy to see how the potential benefits of team building can also vary, depending on the initial choices made in terms of goals and type of team building.

However, our hands-on experience has taught us that in order to fully enjoy the benefits of a team building activity, it is fundamentally important to align at least five factors that relate to the different phases of the process:

  1. The choice of activity, which must align not only with business goals and needs but also with the company’s organizational culture.
  2. The planning of the team building, which must be handled with great care.
  3. The mindset with which the team approaches the activity
  4. The trainer’s ability to engage participants and create moments of learning.
  5. The transfer of concepts learned during the activity into the everyday work environment.

But What Does Team Building Actually Do?

At this point, it is legitimate to ask what team building actually entails and what it does in concrete terms.

In general, the idea behind corporate team building is to promote learning, growth, and connection, by developing essential organizational skills through activities that, at least on the surface, appear unrelated to the workplace.

However, the activities proposed during a team building event are often metaphors for corporate life and the various dynamics that occur within a team, or when the team interacts with other internal or external stakeholders in the organization.

The Purpose of Team Building

The purpose of team building is therefore to develop individual skills that, once brought back to the workplace, can contribute to improving group performance.

Teamwork, relationships, trust, sharing common goals, analysis, strategy, organization, role allocation, delegation, problem solving, creativity, communication, leadership, listening, participation, feedback—these are just some of the aspects generally addressed during team building and that can be explored in the proposed activities.

What Team Building Means to Us

To us, team building means bringing the human factor back to the center of the company, as an invaluable resource for any organization.

Our approach aims to stimulate abilities intrinsic to human nature, fostering the evolution and development of the individual, so they can contribute to the evolution and development of the team—and, consequently, the organization as a whole. For this reason, we have identified 5 key principles on which to design our corporate team building programs, using Nature as a source of inspiration.
