#Creativity: Expressing Your Uniqueness to Innovate and Grow

We have now reached the end of our journey to discover the principles of Team Building Natura®, which concludes with this in-depth study dedicated to Creativity.

A quality that tends to emerge naturally when Listening, Emotional Intelligence, Empathy, and Trust coexist within a team. This further confirms how the five principles behind our corporate outdoor team building experiences are deeply interconnected.

In this final article, we’ll focus on Creativity, sharing the meaning we attribute to it and explaining why, in our view, it plays an essential role in the business world.

Creating the Right Conditions to Express Creativity

Let’s start by saying that Creativity is another innate quality, something that is naturally part of who we are. Unlike other skills we’ve previously discussed, it doesn’t necessarily require specific training. Instead, it needs the right conditions to be fully expressed.

Physical and Mental Wellbeing

Cultivating a state of physical and mental wellbeing, for example, helps activate our parasympathetic nervous system (instead of the sympathetic one), lowering our stress levels. This is often underestimated, but it’s critical, because stress drastically reduces our creative power. When we are stressed, we enter the well-known “fight, flight, or freeze” state.

And in such a state, how can we possibly express our full creative potential?

In those moments, what really matters to us—whether consciously or unconsciously—is to find the quickest and most effective solution to escape a “discomfort zone” or perceived threat. And just like that, Creativity is gone.

That’s why learning to consciously use Listening, Emotional Intelligence, and Empathy can help us greatly in maintaining our personal balance. To be the creators and guardians of our own physical and mental wellbeing—a fundamental condition for expressing our full potential, including our Creativity.

Trust and Psychological Safety

Likewise, developing a mindset rooted in Trust and working in an environment that radiates psychological safety puts us in the best physical and mental condition to unleash our Creativity.

When we feel safe and protected, our defenses come down. It becomes easier to give ourselves permission to explore new territories while staying tuned in. To consider alternative solutions. In other words, to adopt an open and curious mindset, free from constraints and biases.

As a result, we become more inclined to activate lateral thinking, shift perspectives, and spot innovative, out-of-the-box solutions. We open ourselves to new ideas, plans, and strategies, pursuing that continuous improvement that, in an increasingly competitive market, can truly make the difference.

You Can’t Just “Command” Creativity

Creating a work environment that fosters Creativity is a prerequisite—but it may still not be enough.

We are not machines. You can’t simply command a team to “be creative” and expect it to happen. Scheduling a brainstorming session well in advance doesn’t guarantee that everyone will show up feeling inspired at that exact moment. Someone might just not be in the right headspace.

Why?

Simply because we are human beings, constantly influenced by emotions, moods, and inner states. Often absorbed in our thoughts, perhaps guided by mental models we no longer even recognize. Each person immersed in their own experiences, dealing with their own day-to-day challenges.

All these factors—and more—constantly impact us and our creative abilities, which reflect who we are in any given moment. That’s why, when we talk about Creativity, we must always include the human element.

But There’s More

If we really want to maximize any creative process, it’s essential that every team member feels deeply connected—first with themselves, and ideally also with the rest of the team. Because it is in our very human nature that a large part of our immense creative power resides.

Creativity Lives Within Us

Creativity is deeply tied to our human nature. It manifests in every aspect of our lives. It’s all around us—in the beautiful planet we inhabit, in our endless stream of thoughts, in our bodies that constantly renew themselves, even without us noticing: moment by moment, every cell is changing, evolving, regenerating.

Everything is in a state of constant evolution—a never-ending creative process.

We ourselves are an expression of this perpetual movement. Creativity lives within us. We are creative by definition, simply by being human, regardless of our role or job title.

An Example?

Think of our capacity for adaptation—another intrinsic human quality, born from our innate survival instinct.

Adapting means learning to flow with the surrounding environment, constantly renewing ourselves in response to external stimuli. It’s this natural ability that drives us to seek new ideas and solutions for the ever-changing challenges we face.

A look at human history makes it clear that our ability to adapt has always been—and continues to be—a key engine for our evolution and capacity to innovate across every field.

And isn’t that what Creativity is?

A natural capacity within all of us, aimed at ensuring our survival in any circumstance—while hopefully improving our quality and way of life.

So, what we must do is simply create the right conditions to stimulate this creative spirit that already lives within us. And in a world where the acronym VUCA (Volatility, Uncertainty, Complexity, Ambiguity) is no longer sufficient to describe our context—now replaced by BANI (Brittle, Anxious, Nonlinear, Incomprehensible)—stimulating creativity in every individual becomes essential for survival. It can help increase our competitiveness in the markets we serve.

That’s why we believe Creativity is an essential, priceless resource for any organization. And we’re convinced that if we want to build truly creative teams, we must value and nurture aspects that are uniquely human. We must be ready to invest in developing innate qualities and skills, encouraging both individual and group growth, and fostering self-awareness.

Expression of Being

This belief is rooted in the idea that each of us is unique and unrepeatable. And in the Team Building Natura® vision, Creativity is the ultimate expression of that uniqueness. It’s the path through which we express who we truly are.

When we combine our innate creative spirit with our skills, abilities, and knowledge, what emerges is always extraordinary. This applies to every area of life—but in the business world, it takes on strategic importance. It becomes a competitive edge, enabling us to innovate and offer solutions, products, and services that no one had thought of before.

After all, that’s what creativity is all about: exploring new territory, expressing a novel idea that didn’t exist before, nurturing it, and making it a tangible alternative.

It’s up to us to activate our lateral thinking and continuously reshape reality. To adopt a mindset that invites us to do what we were born to do: create. A responsibility we owe to ourselves, to others, and to the society we live in. A quality that can help us grow and develop both as a team and as a company.

Case Study: The Possible Consequences of a Toxic Environment

Let’s revisit the case study of Sandro and Giuliano from our previous article on the 5 principles of Team Building Natura®.

At the time, we described how Giuliano, along with other close collaborators of Sandro, had lost confidence in themselves and in their leader. The workplace was filled with frustration, demotivation, isolation, and lack of direction. Conflicts began to arise, and people increasingly focused only on their own personal interests. It had become a near-toxic environment.

Building Walls Instead of Bridges

Certainly not a setting that fosters creativity or lateral thinking, nor supports personal or group growth. On the contrary, it pushed people to close up and become defensive. To protect themselves by building walls instead of bridges. People felt threatened and experienced varying levels of stress depending on their position in the company.

In such a scenario, the body instinctively activates the most primitive part of the brain—the so-called reptilian brain. As a result, people enter a state where rational thinking fades, and choices narrow down to fight, flight, or freeze.

The Outcome?

In the case study, Giuliano and another close collaborator of Sandro resigned (flight).

Others stayed and launched an internal battle to try to change the situation, identifying Sandro as the common enemy (fight). All their creative energy was funneled into this internal struggle, rather than into the company’s development.

Meanwhile, the rest of the employees lived in a state of constant limbo, waiting to see what would happen (freeze).

The Importance of Investing in Human Potential

In such an environment, how can we support our team’s growth? Encourage openness, curiosity, and participation? Or expect the team to be creative?

That’s why we believe it’s crucial to consciously invest in human potential—and to create the right conditions for it.

Imagine what could have happened if Sandro had questioned his leadership style. If he had worked to build trust and psychological safety. If he had created a space for honest and authentic dialogue where people felt heard and encouraged to take responsibility.

Most likely, each of his collaborators would have contributed spontaneously to the growth of his company, instead of closing in on himself, focusing exclusively on his personal goal. Thanks to a company culture oriented to the growth and valorization of people, his team could have used their creative power to explore new opportunities and solutions, perhaps defining new plans and strategies, instead of wasting their energies in an internal struggle without winners, but losers.

Not Only That!

Sandro could have benefited from the growth of the talents within his company.

Take Giuliano, for example. He had great potential that Sandro failed to recognize and nurture. He didn’t create the fertile ground for Giuliano to grow personally and professionally. A journey that, step by step, could have led him to acquire new skills—integrating them with his creative spirit to create a powerful combination.

Over time, Giuliano would have increasingly made that knowledge his own, learning to integrate it with his creative spirit and giving life to a truly explosive mix. A mix that perhaps would have allowed him to study new logistics solutions, explore new markets, or develop innovative strategies, capable of generating value for the company.

Instead, all that potential was lost. And now, someone else will likely reap the rewards of Giuliano’s work.

A Team Building in Nature to Stimulate Creativity

We’ve seen how Creativity is an expression of our being. Stimulating our creative spirit means valuing our humanity.

That’s why, in our outdoor team building activities focused on Creativity, our first goal is to promote a sense of wellbeing and enjoyment. A necessary condition for participants to open up, embrace the experience, and cultivate curiosity. An attitude that allows them to explore new ways of listening and activate emotional intelligence and empathy.

A mindset that, one step at a time, invites the most human part of the participants to emerge, recognize themselves and experiment.

Cultivating a State of Presence

We help team members cultivate conscious presence—shifting focus away from their thoughts. Overcoming limiting beliefs, mental models, and judgments. Making space.
This lays the foundation for a truly authentic and unfiltered experience. A transformative experience that each participant can engage with at their own pace. Freely, with no pressure.
This is how participants reconnect with their Creativity—an unmistakable reflection of their unique way of seeing and shaping the world.

Nature as an Endless Source of Inspiration

In this exciting journey, Nature becomes an infinite source of inspiration. It opens up learning pathways and helps participants expand their map of the world. They gain deeper self-awareness, a better understanding of others, and greater team connection.

A space for sincere dialogue naturally emerges, allowing genuine relationships to bloom. Participants connect as humans, even before professionals—an essential ingredient in our outdoor team building formats.
